We think nothing of making sure a child is
taken care of medically, but what about their educational and emotional needs
while hospitalized? Over 10 years ago,
Kaz Mamon visited a child of a friend who was in Mott Children’s hospital in Ann Arbor. On the way out, he noticed many pictures and
drawings on the walls. Kaz thought to
himself, “Who’s addressing the educational and emotional needs of these
children while in the hospital?” Six
weeks later the first Mamon Ride was underway and over 700 bikes showed
up. That day, they raised $15,500 to
help the children continue their education and to help keep their mind off of
their illness. Ever since that very
first ride, many more have occurred. 10
annual rides, seven Halloween rides, three Easter rides, a very special Santa
ride, Mamon at the Whaley House in Flint, and a trip to Minnesota to the Cancer
Center are some of the events that have made a real impact in children’s lives. Over the years we’ve had over 7,500 people
riding with us, helped 28 hospitals, and have raised over $350,000 in cash and
have distributed 1,100 computers (valued at $250,000+) donated by EDS and GM to
30 hospitals throughout Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania.
"In 100 Years from now, It will not matter as to the size of my bank account, the type, size, or location of the home I have lived in... or the car I have driven. But the world may be different because I was IMPORTANT ... in the Life of a Child."
